Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training
DBT(Dialectical Behavorial Skills Therapy) focuses on teaching skills in four core areas.

-
Mindfulness
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness
-
Distress Tolerance
-
Emotion Regulation
Each area of focus contains a specific set of practical skills to be used daily in life. The D in DBT stands for dialectical which includes the idea that for healing we need to focus on both change and acceptance.
Core Components of DBT :
-
Mindfulness: Mindfulness a core focus in DBT. In mindfulness one learns to become more aware of thoughts and emotions arising. On learns how to observe themselves without judgement.
-
Emotion Regulation: One learns to manage their emotions in a more even way. Turning down the volume and intensity of emotional highs and lows to experience them in a more manageable way. One learns to create positive emotional experiences
-
Distress Tolerance: One learns how to deal with difficult and intense emotions in a harm reduction model to reduce suffering and pain. Through learning these skills one can become more confident and resilient to distressing emotions and experiences.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness: One learns to manage relationships. Learning tools to ask for what you want, say no and learning skills to manage conflict and create friendships.
